Magic

Magic,
a fundamental force of existence that has been around since
the Multiverse's creation. Throughout time, people have dedicated
their lives to the practice of magic, doing so at great cost
to themselves. Magic has never been an easy power to master,
yet it provides capabilities that are beyond imagination.
In order to understand why magic is so powerful, one must
know from where magic derives.
The power,
from which the Multiverse sprang, by the will of the elder
gods, is known as the ether. The ether is the fundamental
building blocks of the entire Multiverse, and through it all
things are possible. However, as time progresses, the ether
begins to decay, and through this process of decay the force
known as mana is created. Since the ether is the very basis
of the entire Multiverse, mana can and has permeated throughout
the entire Multiverse. Mana is the source of energy that magic
draws upon.
Now, how
does one go about working magic? The most common way magic
is done is through the implementation of spells. What are
spells, then? Spells are arcane formulae that serve as foci
for mana. Now, in plain English, this means that through some
method, usually the incantation of words of power and gestures,
the person focuses mana into a desired effect. The more powerful
the spell to be used, the greater the draw of mana.
Now, what
can be done with magic? As is the case of those rare things,
which can claim to be derived, to any extent, from the ether,
nearly anything can be done with magic. Depending on the focus
used and the intonation of words of power, magic can heal
or destroy as easily as anything else. However, there's a
drawback when using magic. Whereas psionics draw upon the
user's mental energies, magic draws upon the mana of the world.
Now, this doesn't seem to be much of a drawback, but consider
this. Psionics can be utilized quickly, for the person innately
knows the powers he does, and simply does them at a thought.
Magic, on the other hand, must be focused upon and drawn from
the energy of the world, meaning more powerful spells take
more time to use. This isn't so much a drawback when using
minor spells, but those that are the greatest take more time
to focus the mana properly.
Can anyone
perform magic? If they're willing to learn the proper methods
of harnessing mana and the incantations needed for the spells,
then yes. However, some people have more of an affinity towards
magic than others. As much as a person may try, only those
with a natural affinity for it can command the greatest magic.
