Characteristics of a Variable Fighter
A VF has
very specific characteristics that set it apart from any other
mecha as yet developed by mankind. The VF's primary configuration,
known simply as fighter mode, allows it to execute its main
objective (air combat). In this configuration, the VF operates
much like 20th century jet fighters, with primary missile
armaments and cannons to rule the skies. However, the ability
of the Mobile Suit to fight effectively on the ground was
something that also spurred the creation of a humanoid form
to give maximum mobility and versatility on the ground. The
third and final configuration is an intermediary form that
was originally designed to ease the conversion from airborne
to ground mecha. Called GERWALK mode (now called Guardian),
this mode incorporated elements of fighter and solider mode
to allow high-speed mobility near or on the
ground, or aerial maneuvers that would otherwise be impossible
in fighter configuration.
